The idea for this game comes from a university exam. One of my students had very bad handwriting and when they were answering questions about a “first person shooter” it looked like “first person shouter.” As I graded the exam, the idea grew on me and by the time I was done,I knew that I needed to make this strange concept a reality. At first, I only knew that the player’s voice needed to destroy things, but a few options emerged.
The first version of this game was a story-based game where you played as a series of angry characters. You started off playing as a child, progressing until you reached the final boss – your mother. Then you would play as the mother as she takes out her frustrations on the world. This keeps going through multiple protagonists as rage slowly spreads.
The second idea, tentatively titled Yeet the Rich, positioned the player as a worker who had recently been laid off. The company they worked for had recently been purchased by a hedge fund. The player shouted and destroyed their way through company headquarters, the hedge fund, the CEO’s mansion and finally their yacht, taking vengeance on the people who caused their misery.
In the end, we settled on a simpler concept for First Person Shouter: a destruction simulator that allows players to shout at everyday frustrations. It turns out that yelling at things and seeing them explode is just really good fun. And we were off to the races.
